Election Commission officials reached the Bangabhaban for a meeting with President Mohammad Shahabuddin today (November 9) to obtain permission to announce the schedule of the 12th national parliamentary election.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal and four election commissioners entered the Bangabhaban at 11:52am.
EC secretary Jahangir Alam yesterday (November 8) said the schedule is likely to be announced in the first half of this month.
During the meeting, the CEC will inform the overall progress and preparation of the commission relating to the announcement of the polls schedule and other issues, Alam said.
He said the country’s prevailing atmosphere is still conducive to announce the schedule for the 12th parliamentary election.
"The election schedule may be announced any day in the first half of November, with the national election likely to be held either in the last week of December or the first week of January," he added.
"If there is any advice and direction from the president, the commission will take note," he said.
The EC already held meetings with Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan and the heads of the law enforcement agencies and ministries.
