RAJSHAHI: The three detained top Jamaat leaders, including party chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, were Wednesday shown arrested in the case of Chhatra League activist Faruque killing at Rajshahi University.

Metropolitan Magistrate Amirul Islum granted the plea as investigating officer Sohel Rana petitioned the court for showing the bigwig trio arrested in the case at about 11am.

Islami Chhatra Shibir’s RU Unit Vice-president Raisul Islam, earlier arrested in this case, confessed to the involvement of the three top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami in a statement before the court under section 164.

Rajshahi University student Faruque, an activist of the associate student front of the ruling Awami League, was killed during a massive clash between Shibir and Chhatra League on the RU campus on February 8 and 9.

Chhatra League RU unit General Secretary Mazedul Islam Apu filed the case against 28 persons with Motihar thana on February 9.

Jamaat Ameer Moulana Matiur Rahman Nizami, Secretary-General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed and Nayab-e Ameer Delwar Hossain Sayedee were arrested in the capital and Savar on Tuesday, hours after a Dhaka court issued arrest warrant against them in connection with a case filed against them for hurting religious sentiments of Muslims

The embattled Islamic party leaders got implicated in the cases at a time when the AL government is readying the stage for the belated trial of 1971 war criminals, including them as main suspects.
