National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Dr Ali Riaz today said experts have identified four possible mechanisms for implementing the July Charter.
Speaking at a meeting with representatives from 29 political parties at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, he said the proposed methods include an ordinance, an executive order, a referendum, and a special constitutional order.
On the government’s decision to extend the commission’s tenure by one month, Ali Riaz explained: “Another reason for the extension is that if any office continues for a year, it takes some time to wrap up its activities. The government has considered ensuring that we can complete the work within the extended tenure. In this context, we are present here today.”
Earlier on Monday, a gazette notification announced the extension of the commission’s tenure until October 15, effective immediately.
The seven-member National Consensus Commission, led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, was formed on February 12 and tasked with submitting its report within six months, originally due on August 15.
However, due to incomplete proceedings, the government extended the commission’s tenure twice—first until September 15, and now further until October 15—to allow for the completion of its work.
