DHAKA: The suspended 45 teachers of BSMMU Friday alleged that their suspension was an outcome of “political vengeance” and a design for creating scope for Awami Leaguers.   

But Vice-chancellor of the medical university Prof Pran Gopal Dutta readily rejected the allegations, saying that the actions were taken acting on definite irregularities and corruption on their part.

The university syndicate Wednesday suspended the 45 teachers as the allegations of irregularities regarding their appointments and promotions were prima facie proved, the varsity officials said.

In the suspension orders, the teachers have been asked to show cause within seven days.

The allegations have it that the suspended teachers got jobs during the four-party alliance government. “Allegations of widespread corruption and irregularities were made against them at that time in procurement, appointment and promotion, but the alliance government did not make inquiry into these allegations.”

Suspended medical officer of neuro-medicine department of the university Dr. Jubayer, rejecting allegations of corruption, told banglanews24.com.bd that those who were suspended had no scope for committing corruption because none of them was involved with administration.

About the alleged corruption of co-chairman Fazl-e-Alaullah of the department, he said Dr. Alaullah gets several crore taka annually from a diagnostic centre alone.

“Since he is a pro-Awami League influential Professor, the university authorities are not taking action against him,” he said.

He also alleged that the co-chairman used to send patients to that centre for tests and had created pressures on the juniors. After he opposed the activities, he was transferred to neurosurgery department.

Dr. Jubayer further deplored that experienced professors were sacked one after another and new doctors appointed for which patients were dying in the hospital.  “If the situation continued, the earned glory of the university will be lost,” he said.

The suspended teachers will give reply to their explanation letters within seven days, he said.

Dr. Pran Gopal Dutta said the actions were taken against them in line with inquiry reports given by Nazrul Committee, Shahjahan Committee and Parliamentary Standing Committee. He also rejected the allegations of suspended teachers about administration.
