Family members of the July martyrs have demanded the resignation of the government’s law adviser after bail was granted to those accused in murder cases linked to the anti-discrimination student movement and subsequent uprising.
Among the cases is the killing of Imam Hasan Taim, who was shot dead during the protests.
On Tuesday (August 19), relatives staged a sit-in protest in front of the Secretariat in Dhaka after a police officer accused in the July killing case was granted bail.
They later marched towards the Secretariat, demanding the resignation of Law Adviser Asif Nazrul as well as the judges who approved bail for the accused.
When police attempted to block them, the families of those killed and injured in the July movement continued their sit-in at the site.
“Despite photo and video evidence, how can one of the killers of the July uprising be released on bail?” asked the families.
“Did our children give their lives for this? Did they sacrifice to bring about a new Bangladesh? What role did the judiciary and judges play in this? This has only been possible because the law has been weakened. We demand the resignation of both the judges and Law Adviser Asif Nazrul,” they declared.
