BGB deployed in Faridpur over lynching of 2 workers

Four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed to maintain law and order in Faridpur as two construction workers were beaten to death in the wake of a temple fire in Dumain union under Madhukhali upazila of the district.

BGB team was deployed at Baliakandi and Baghate Bazar under Faridpur Sadar and Madhukhali upazilas around 9 am.

Shariful Islam, public relations officer of the BGB, confirmed the matter to Banglanews.

Earlier on Friday Border guards were deployed in the area on the same ground.

The BGB members along with the village police are engaged in patrolling in and around the area in coordination with the district magistrate to maintain law and order, said the BGB official.

The overall situation in the area appears to be normal, according to the official.

A tense situation has been prevailing in the area since last Friday following the incident, prompting all male members of the Hindu community to flee their homes.

Ashraful, 21, and his younger brother Ashadul, 15, sons of Shahjahan Khan of Ghoperghat village of the upazila were beaten to death following a feud centering construction work at Panchapalli Government Primary School in the area.

Later, a fire broke out at Kali idols of the Barwari temple in Hindu-dominated Panchpalli village on Thursday evening, according to Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Md Qamrul Ahsan Talukdar.

Hindu residents reacted with anger to the incident, resulting in the locking up of seven workers accused of involvement in the desecration of the idols who were constructing a wash block at Panchapalli Government Primary School, 20 yards off the temple.

On information, Madhukhali police and upazila administration officials rushed to the spot but the mob also confined them.

With the help of Faridpur Sadar and Rajbari police, the besieged people were eventually rescued after several hours.

Seven workers, rescued with injuries, four of them found unconscious and they were swiftly sent to Madhukhali Upazila Health Complex and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital in Faridpur.

Later, two of the injured individuals succumbed to their injuries.
