The organisers of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement today (August 3) announced a single-point demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet members.
Nahid Islam, one of the key organisers, announced it at a mammoth rally at the Central Shaheed Minar.
He also said they will enforce the non-cooperation movement starting from tomorrow.
Thousands of people from various walks of life have thronged the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka, chanting slogans to voice their demands.
Every corner of Shaheed Minar was filled to capacity with protesters.
Earlier, groups of protesters from Dhanmondi, Rabindra Sarobar, Press Club, Paltan, and Badda areas had begun their march towards Shaheed Minar.
Bangladesh has arrested more than 10,000 people and banned a major opposition party as part of a crackdown on dissent after weeks of protests.
The country has been in turmoil since a mass student movement began against quotas for government jobs. It escalated into deadly clashes when protesters were attacked by pro-government groups and hit by police with teargas, rubber bullets and pellets.
According to human rights groups, at least 266 people were killed in the violence and more than 7,000 injured.
