DHAKA: Twenty eight new nuclear power units will be built in Russia before 2030.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin discloses the plant during a meeting with the students of a university in Moscow recently.

Putin said, “In Russia’s energy mix, share of nuclear power is not big, it is approx. 16%. Our goal is to reach 25% by 2030 and to achieve the target we must set up 28 big nuclear power units in the country. This number is nearly the same as the total number of nuclear power units built and commissioned over the entire Soviet period.”

The President informed that Russia’s State Nuclear Power Corporation - Rosatom will implement the proposed plan.

In addition to ROSATOM will build 22 nuclear power units in abroad, according to the foreign orders receives so far by the state owned company.

Putin opined that the further development of nuclear power in the world is inevitable. In spite of the fact that after the Fukushima-Daiichi accident, Germany and Japan have abandoned their nuclear power development programme.

“It is impossible to reverse the progress. Safety of nuclear power plant is another issue,” Putin added.

Putin confirmed that ROSATOM offers nuclear power projects for both domestic and international markets, meeting highest safety standards, introduced after the accident in Japan.

Under an agreement between the Governments of Bangladesh and Russia, Rosatom will set up two nuclear power units, each of 1,000MW capacity at Rooppur, Ishwardi of Pabna.
