Shakil, Rupa placed on 5-day remand again

A Dhaka court today (August 26) placed journalist Rupa and Shakil on five-day remand in the case over the death of a garment worker Rubel during the anti—discrimination student movement.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court judge Mosharraf Hossain passed the order.

Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, Inspector Mintoo Chandra Banik of Adabor police station, filed a 10-day remand petition for the both accused in court.

On August 22, the court granted a 4-day remand for Rupa and Shakil in a separate case related to the murder of Fazlul Karim in Uttara East police station.

According to the case statement, during the anti-discrimination student movement on August 5, Rubel and hundreds of students along with general people held a protest march around 11am in the Ring Road area under Adabor police station.

During the protest, police and leaders and activists of various Awami League affiliated groups, including the Chhatra League, Jubo League and other affiliated organization of Awami League, opened fire towards the protesters. Rubel was shot and was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.

Rubel’s father, Rafiqul Islam, filed the case with Adabor Police Station on August 22.

The main accused in the case is former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
