At one point, the accused shot him in the abdomen and both legs with a pistol. Locals rescued him and admitted him to Era Hospital in Dhaka’s Kakrail.

Earlier on Sunday (25 August), former Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from Shantinagar area of the capital. He was later shown as arrested in a murder cases filed with Rupganj Police Station in Narayanganj. The Narayanganj Magistrate Court then granted a six-day remand for him.

On the same day, another case was filed by a woman, Nurunnahar Begum, against former Golam Dastagir Gazi and his Personal Secretary Emdadul Haque, along with 18 others, accusing them of vandalising and looting houses in Rupganj’s Chanpara.

Meanwhile, sources said that former chairman of Rupganj’s Kayetpara Union and chairman of Rongdhonu Group, Rafiqul Islam Rafiq has a dozen cases against him for fraud, breach of trust and forgery. Despite having arrest warrants in different cases, he has continued to move freely, remaining a close associate of former Textile and Jute Minister and ex-local MP Golam Dastagir Gazi. Allegations suggest that Gazi and Rafiq have established a reign of crime in Rupganj.

Victims claimed that for a long time, Rupganj has been under the rule of land grabbing, murder, and looting, directly under the protection of the Gazi family and Rafiq. The people of the area seek relief from this situation.

Gazi and Rafiq ruled Rupganj with iron fist

Locals said that Gazi family and Rafiq have done everything from harbouring armed criminals and terrorists to maintaining control over their stronghold. Their names are associated with drug trafficking, terrorism, abduction, murder, and land grabbing. Anyone who protests against them faces lawsuits, attacks, and physical torture.

Gazi and Rafiq also have multiple sensitive allegations against them, including land grabbing and orchestrating kidnappings and murders through their terror squads. Over the past few years, their reign of terror in Rupganj has been so extreme that many families have been forced to leave the area due to their atrocities.

Rafiq also accused in Yasin murder case in Fatullah
