One month into AL govt’s fall: Shaheedi March starts at 3pm

Students are set to stage a nationwide "Shaheedi March" today to commemorate one month since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's autocratic government.

Sarjis Alam, a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which led the mass uprising against the former fascist regime, made the announcement during a press conference at Dhaka University's Student-Teacher Centre on Wednesday.

The march will take place across the country, with the main event starting at 3 pm from the foot of the Raju Sculpture on the DU campus.

Sarjis urged students to join the march, bringing memorials such as photographs to honor the martyrs of the quota reform movement and the subsequent uprising.

Starting from the DU, the march will parade through Nilkhet, New Market, Kalabagan, Dhanmondi, Sangsad Bhaban, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar and Shahbagh before ending at the Central Shaheed Minar.

Sarjis said the march will be held in every district and upazila of the country apart from Dhaka city.

Speaking on the occasion, Abu Bakr Majumder, another key coordinator, emphasised reform of the state. “We’ll travel across the country in groups to reform the state. We’ll try to listen to people during the visits. We’ll be the mediator, listen to the people and leave it to society. Hopefully, the people of the society will help implement it.”

He said many gangs are involved in extortion, syndicate and occupation. “The students will unite and work against these crimes. Besides, they’ll work to root out corruption. We’ll try to give them some specific guidelines,” he said.

Other coordinators Hasnat Abdullah, Lutfar Rahman, Tariqul Islam and Hasib Al Islam were also present at the press conference.
