Chief Adviser (CA) Prof Muhammad Yunus has asked the authorities concerned to finalise a proposal to turn Ganabhaban into a museum, containing the evidence of the atrocities that took place during the July-August student movement.

The chief adviser came up with the order while visiting Ganabhaban, the official residence of Bangladesh prime minister, on Monday (Oct 28).

“The replica of Aynaghar, a secret prison where the former Prime Minister’s dissidents were held and tortured inhumanly, will have to be set up inside the Ganabhaban,” Yunus said while visiting the site.

Ousted dictator Sheikh Hasina lived here during her 15-year rule, which became a symbol of repression and brutality.

The museum should preserve the memories of Sheikh Hasina’s misrule and the anger when people expressed following her ouster from power, he said.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters stormed the Ganabhaban on August 5, moments after Sheikh Hasina fled the country and took refuge in India.

Protesters marked their anger in the Ganabhaban walls and rooms by drawing graffiti and writing protest notes such as Khuni Hasina (killer Hasina).

Advisers Adilur Rahman Khan, Nahid Islam, and Asif Mahmud accompanied the Chief Adviser during the visit.

While visiting the Ganabhaban, Yunus told the advisers to consult with experts on setting up the museums immediately and asked them to finalise proposals by December this year.

Nahid Islam, a student leader turned adviser, said misdeeds of the Hasina regime, starting from 2009, will be meticulously preserved at the museum.

He said they were consulting with experts from other countries to find out how they constructed memorials commemorating their revolutions and uprisings.

Mahfuj Alam, special assistant to the Chief Adviser, was also present during the visit.
