BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia attended the Armed Forces Day reception at Senakunja in Dhaka Cantonment on Thursday, marking her first public appearance since 2018.
Speaking at the event, Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus expressed gratitude to Khaleda Zia for her presence.
“We are honored to have Begum Khaleda Zia, three-time Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the wife of Bir Muktijoddha Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, among us today. For over a decade, she was unable to attend this grand occasion. Her presence today fills us with joy and pride,” he said.
Despite her health condition, Khaleda Zia’s participation in the event was lauded by Dr. Yunus, who wished her a speedy recovery. “We are grateful that she could join us on this special day,” he added.
Khaleda Zia last attended the Armed Forces Day reception in 2012. Following her release on August 5 after her sentence was suspended by the President, this marks her first appearance at a state event.
During the reception, Khaleda Zia was seen seated beside Dr. Yunus, engaging in cheerful conversation. Observers noted her in good spirits.
Dr. Yunus also mingled with other guests, exchanging pleasantries throughout the event.
This year, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and 26 other party leaders were invited to the Armed Forces Day reception at Senakunja.
