OCs to be suspended for refusing to register cases: DMP Chief

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzad Ali has warned that if any officer-in-charge (OC) refuses to file cases will be suspended within a minute.

The newly appointed DMP chief made the strict remark during a meeting with auto-rickshaw, auto-van, and easy-bike drivers at the DMP headquarters on Monday (Nov 25).

At the meeting, a rickshaw puller complained that he was beaten in the Kamrangirchar area twice, once on Sunday and earlier on another day.

In response, the DMP commissioner said, "Why didn’t you file a case? If it is a case-worthy incident, the OC must file the case. If not, the OC will be suspended in a minute."

Addressing extortion issues, commissioner said, "There will be no extortion from rickshaw or van drivers. No one can take money from the hard-earned income of poor people. Local thugs share the extorted money among themselves. If any policeman is found involved, they will not be spared. Action will be taken if anyone takes money from the poor."

To curb extortion, the commissioner suggested forming committees with rickshaw-pullers and OCs working together to address the issue.

Earlier in the day, representatives from two rickshaw-pullers’ organizations held a meeting with the DMP commissioner at the headquarters. They raised various issues, including being forced to use main roads for survival.

The rickshaw-pullers said, "We are often not allowed to enter lanes in some areas and are forced to use the main roads for survival."
