Mamun exempted from 10-year imprisonment

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today (Dec 12) upheld the High Court verdict that exempted businessman Gias Uddin Al Mamun from 10 years' imprisonment in a corruption case.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed delivered the verdict.

Expressing satisfaction after the judgement, Gias Uddin Al Mamun said, "Thank you, thank God.'

Lawyer Fida M Kamal was present in the court for Mamun, while Asif Hossain represented the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

On April 5, 2007, the ACC lodged the case with Cantonment Police Station on charges of not submitting his wealth statement to the commission within the deadline.

He was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment in the graft case in March 27, 2008, and fined Tk 10 lakh.

The High Court on July 30, 2012, acquitted Mamun in the case. Then the anti-graft body went to the Appellate Division.
