The United States has reiterated its commitment to resolving the Rohingya refugee crisis while expressing concern over the ongoing situation in Myanmar, citing risks to regional stability and security.

“We are closely monitoring developments. We remain concerned by the conflict and its potential to undermine regional stability and security,” said Matthew Miller, Spokesperson for the US Department of State, during a media briefing in Washington on December 17.

Miller’s remarks came in response to a question about the US perspective on the Rohingya crisis and the situation in Myanmar, particularly following reports that the Arakan Army has taken control of Rakhine State.

Acknowledging Bangladesh’s significant role, Miller praised the generosity of the Bangladeshi people and government in hosting over 1.2 million Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char who fled persecution in Myanmar.

“We will continue working with Bangladesh to support the Rohingya and other vulnerable communities from Burma (Myanmar) who have sought refuge there,” he affirmed.

The US maintains that addressing the crisis remains a priority and has pledged ongoing collaboration with Bangladesh to assist the refugees and uphold regional stability.
