A legal notice has been sent to the government, requesting a ban on all non-essential imports from India.
Supreme Court lawyer Md. Mahmudul Hasan issued the notice on Sunday (Decr 29).
The notice highlights the principle of "comparative advantage," which many countries follow for international trade. It argues that imports should prioritize goods or services that, while domestically producible, are more cost-effective to source from abroad.
It also demanded action against local dummy importers who allegedly facilitate unnecessary imports and send profits to Indian exporters through hundi or money laundering.
The government has been given seven days to implement the ban and take measures against such activities. Failure to act will result in a writ petition being filed in the High Court, read the notice.
The notice was addressed to the Secretaries of the Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Home Affairs, the Chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), and the Chief Controller of Imports and Exports.
