The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has announced a protest rally at Rajbari Ground in Gazipur Sadar Upazila on Saturday (February 8) today condemning a recent violent attack on its organizers.
The central leaders of the platform are expected to attend the event at 1:30 pm.
The announcement was made via a post on the movement’s verified Facebook page in the early hours of Saturday.
The statement read, "A massive protest rally will be held today to denounce the brutal attack carried out by Awami terrorists, Mozammel-Jahangir’s ‘Chapati Bahini,’ against our organizers in Gazipur. Students, general people, and central leaders from across the country will be present in solidarity."
On Friday (February 7), a violent clash erupted at the residence of AKM Mozammel Haque, the ousted Minister for Liberation War Affairs, in the Dhirashram area of Gazipur City Corporation.
Reports indicate that Awami League activists and supporters assaulted a group of individuals, leaving several injured. However, the police have yet to disclose the identities of the wounded.
A representative from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, speaking from a hospital, said that their team had been raising awareness to prevent further attacks on homes amid the ongoing political turmoil.
As part of this effort, they had been engaging with local residents in Dhirashram and sharing emergency contact numbers, he said.
During their outreach, the group received reports that a mob was looting Mozammel Haque’s house. In response, a team of activists rushed to the scene to intervene. While some of them successfully stopped the intruders, a separate group of armed individuals suddenly launched a violent attack, wielding machetes, knives, and chapatis.
The representative further alleged that law enforcement arrived at the scene more than two hours after the incident, failing to take timely action. At least 15 individuals were injured in the attack, with several in critical condition.
Gazipur Metropolitan Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADC-North) Rabiul Islam confirmed the incident, saying that it followed a pattern of violent confrontations occurring nationwide in recent days.
"When an angry crowd approached the former minister’s residence, Awami League leaders and activists retaliated, leading to the clash. Fourteen people were injured and are currently receiving treatment at Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital. The incident is under investigation, and legal action is being taken," he added.
