Former Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Saiful Islam has been arrested in a murder case filed with Chattogram city’s Chandgaon Police Station.
Police arrested him in Dhaka on Wednesday (February 12).
CMP Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Mohammad Rois Uddin said Saiful Islam was arrested based on specific allegations in the case. He is being brought to Chattogram for further legal procedures.
The case was filed over the killing of a student during an anti-discrimination protest in Chattogram in July 2024. The protest left 10 people dead, including several students, and injured over a hundred others.
Saiful Islam, a 20th batch officer of the Bangladesh Civil Service, served as the 32nd CMP Commissioner. Before that, he was the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Dhaka Metro Rail (MRT).
