United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk is set to present the UN's fact-finding report on alleged human rights violations during the July-August 2024 protests in Bangladesh at an event in Geneva on Wednesday
According to the UN’s official website, the event will be streamed live on YouTube (https://youtube.com/live/szaCueW3WLs) at 6 PM Dhaka time.
During the session, UN officials will engage with member states and civil society representatives to discuss the report’s findings and recommendations, aiming to advance accountability, justice, and human rights reforms in Bangladesh.
Representatives from Bangladesh’s interim government and civil society are expected to participate in the discussions.
Addressing the Human Rights Council’s 58th session in Geneva on Monday, Turk expressed hope that the independent fact-finding report would contribute to truth-telling, accountability, reparations, and meaningful reforms in Bangladesh.
“It is vital to ensure due process in criminal proceedings and to investigate retaliatory violence, particularly against minority groups,” Turk stated.
Reflecting on last year’s events, he remarked that Bangladesh witnessed an eruption of violence as authorities of the time “brutally suppressed” a student-led movement advocating for human rights.
“The nation is now navigating a new path,” he said, emphasizing that the UN’s report serves as a significant step toward justice and reform.
