UN Secretary-General to visit Bangladesh on Thursday

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is set to arrive in Dhaka on Thursday (March 13) for a four-day visit.

During his visit, he will travel to Cox’s Bazar to visit the Rohingya refugee camps. 

On Friday, he will join an Iftar event with Rohingya refugees, alongside Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Mozumdar, disclosed the matter at a press briefing on Wednesday (March 12) at the Foreign Service Academy. 

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam was also present.

Guterres will arrive in Dhaka at 5:00 pm on Thursday and return on March 16. His main engagements will take place on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, he will meet Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain before traveling to Cox’s Bazar.

The Chief Adviser will also visit Cox’s Bazar for separate programs before attending the Iftar with Guterres. Around 100,000 Rohingya refugees are expected to join the Iftar, which is being hosted by the Chief Adviser.

On Saturday (March 15), Guterres will visit the UN office in Dhaka, meet the National Consensus Commission and civil society members, and hold a press conference. In the evening, he will attend an Iftar and dinner hosted in his honor by the Chief Adviser.

This marks Guterres’ second visit to Bangladesh, following his first trip in 2018.
