BSS Editor among 3 sued for defamation

Abdul Hai Sikdar, editor of the Daily Jugantor, has filed a defamation case against three individuals, including the Managing Director and Chief Editor of Bangladesh News Agency (BSS), Mahbub Morshed.

The case was filed on Sunday (March 23) before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Zia Uddin Ahmed's court.

The court accepted the plaintiff's statement and issued summons for the defendants to appear in court on April 28.

The other two defendants in the case are former Joint Secretary of the Dhaka Journalists Union, Khairul Alam, and Asaduzzaman Asad, who is accused of being a financier of the Awami League.

Sikdar’s lawyer, Anwarul Islam, confirmed the matter.

Speaking about the issue, Sikdar said, "I have lived a clean life. The defendants have posted a false and fabricated poem on Facebook, claiming it was written by me. The poem, which I never wrote, insults both Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina. It is clearly a third-rate piece of poetry, and I never write such things."

He added that he had filed the case to protect his reputation.

According to the case, on March 17, Mahbub Morshed posted a fabricated poem on Facebook, claiming it was written by Sikdar. The post suggested that the poem insulted Khaleda Zia while making political claims about Sikdar’s affiliation with the BNP.
