Additional Police Superintendent (Traffic) of Rangamati Anirban Chowdhury and Senior Assistant Commissioner (Executive Magistrate) of Narsingdi Md Saiful Islam have been arrested in a case over genocide and crimes against humanity during the July uprising in Narsingdi.
Prosecutor (Administration) of the International Crimes Tribunal, Gazi Monowar Hossain Tamim, confirmed the matter in a message sent to the media on Monday (April 14).
He said that both officials were named in an arrest warrant issued in connection with the case. Anirban was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon from the Rangamati Superintendent of Police office for questioning and was shown arrested the following day.
Anirban Chowdhury, a 30th BCS police cadre officer, began his career as an assistant superintendent of police. He joined Narsingdi district police as additional superintendent in September 2022 and was posted there during the anti-discrimination movement in July and August 2023. He was later transferred to Rangamati on October 7, 2023, and is currently serving as Additional SP (Traffic).
Md Saiful Islam, a 37th BCS administration cadre officer, is currently working as Senior Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate in Narsingdi.
Legal procedures in the case are ongoing under the authority of the International Crimes Tribunal.
