The price of internet services is being reduced at three new wholesale levels, according to Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser and in charge of the Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Division.
He shared the development on Facebook on Monday (April 21) morning.
According to his post, Fiber@Home management has confirmed a 10 percent price cut at the International Terrestrial Cable (ITC) and International Internet Gateway (IIG) levels, and a 15 percent reduction at the National Transmission (NTTN) level.
Earlier, the Internet Service Providers Association assured that customers would get 10 Mbps internet for Tk 500 instead of 5 Mbps at the same price.
So far, price reductions have been announced across three to four internet licensing stages. The only part remaining is a price cut from the three private mobile operators. The government has already provided them with BWDM and dark fiber facilities.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb said that under the current circumstances, there is no logical reason or excuse for mobile operators not to reduce internet prices. The government has offered policy support and, in cooperation with the private sector, has lowered wholesale prices at international and national levels. It is now time for mobile operators to join this national move.
He also said that reducing mobile internet prices could help ease ongoing high inflation, even if slightly.
Earlier, on Eid day, the state-run mobile operator Teletalk announced a 10 percent discount on internet prices. The government hopes the three private mobile companies will soon make similar announcements in a reasonable manner.
