Actor Siddiqur Rahman Siddiq has been sent to jail after completing a seven-day remand in an attempted murder case linked to the anti-discrimination student movement in the capital’s Gulshan area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain passed the order on Wednesday (May 7).
Earlier, on April 30, the court granted a seven-day remand for Siddiq following a plea by police for interrogation. After completing the remand, the investigation officer of Gulshan Police Station, Sub-Inspector Abdus Salam, presented him before the court and sought his detention in jail, which the court approved.
Siddiq was detained on April 29 in the afternoon by a group of youths while passing through Bailey Road. He was initially taken to Ramna Police Station and later transferred to Gulshan Police Station.
He is a named accused in a case filed over the attempted murder of rickshaw van puller Jabbar Ali Hawlader during the anti-discrimination movement.
According to the case statement, on July 19 last year, during a protest in front of Confidence Tower in Gulshan’s Shahjadpur, protesters came under gunfire, and Jabbar Ali was shot.
Following the incident, Jabbar Ali filed a case with Gulshan Police Station, naming 109 people including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
