Fish exports from Bangladesh to India's Agartala through the Akhaura land port in Brahmanbaria have been temporarily suspended due to complications with export permits.
The suspension began on Wednesday (May 21), according to Md. Faruk Mia, General Secretary of the Fish Exporters Association.
He said that while approval was received from Delhi’s Animal Quarantine Authority, the required export permit from local banks was not issued, forcing exporters to halt shipments for the day.
However, Faruk Mia assured that the problem regarding the Export Authorization Permit (EAP) has already been resolved. Regular fish exports to Agartala are expected to resume from Thursday (May 22).
On average, frozen fish worth about USD 100,000 is exported daily to India through the Akhaura land port.
Meanwhile, the sudden ban by the Indian government on the import of six products from Bangladesh by land has slowed export activities at the port. Mahmudul Hasan, Assistant Director of Akhaura Land Port, confirmed that no fish-laden trucks arrived at the port on Wednesday due to the permit issue.
However, exports of cement and edible oil remain normal.
