Mother, daughter among 3 killed in Pabna road crash

Three people, including a mother and her young daughter, were killed and another seriously injured after a covered van lost control and struck a motorcycle and a pedestrian in Ishwardi upazila on Wednesday (June 11) morning.

The accident occurred around 6:30 am near a petrol pump at Mirkamari Munnar intersection in Salimpur union along the Natore-Pabna-Kushtia highway, police said.

The deceased were identified as Sumona Khatun, 32, her five-year-old daughter Purnta, and Anisur Rahman, 55, a pedestrian.

The injured motorcyclist, Mofizul Islam, was first taken to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex and later referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

According to Pakshi Highway Police and eyewitnesses, the covered van was headed towards Pabna from Kushtia when it veered off the road and struck a stationary motorcycle carrying three people. All of them were thrown to the roadside, where the van ran over them and a nearby pedestrian.

Anisur Rahman died at the scene, they added.

Fire service personnel rushed the three others to hospital, but Sumona and her daughter were pronounced dead on arrival.

Pakshi Highway Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mushfiqur Rahman told Banglanews that the driver and his assistant fled the scene, and the covered van has been seized.

“We have identified the victims and informed their families,” he said. “A case will be filed under the Road Transport Act.”
