Govt rules out new home gas lines: Energy adviser

Energy Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan today firmly said that the government will not provide new gas connections to households, citing waste and prioritization of industrial demand.

“If I had the chance, I would disconnect all household gas lines in Dhaka,” he said after visiting the Kailashtila-7 and Sylhet-10 gas wells in Golapganj, Sylhet. He emphasized that significant gas is wasted in residential supply while industries face shortages.

In response to Sylhet residents’ demands, Khan said the government plans to supply subsidized LPG cylinders instead of pipeline gas.

He also noted a yearly decline of 200 million cubic feet in local gas production, prompting increased LNG imports and efforts to boost domestic output.

The adviser was accompanied by senior officials from the Energy Division, Petrobangla, and BAPEX. Kailashtila-7 and Sylhet-10 wells are currently contributing 16 million cubic feet of gas daily to the national grid.
