National Moon Sighting Committee said the holy month of Muharram for the Hijri year 1447 will begin on Friday (June 27), as the new moon has been sighted in the sky of Bangladesh.
As a result, the holy Ashura will be observed on July 6 (Sunday).
The announcement was made at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee held on Thursday (June 26) evening at the meeting room of the Islamic Foundation at Baitul Mukarram in Dhaka.
The meeting was presided over by Dr A F M Khalid Hossain, adviser to the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
The committee reviewed moon sighting reports received from all divisional and district offices of the Islamic Foundation, the Department of Meteorology, and the National Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization.
