MUNSHIGANJ: Baluakandi Union Parishad Chairman was shot to death in a clash with two groups of the party in Gazaria area of the district during the fourth phase of upazila Parishad elections on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Samsuddin Prodhan, 40, Chairman of Baluakandi union Parishad, also president of Union Awami League.

Locals said that supporters of UP chairman-backed candidate and AL MP Mrinal Kanti-backed contender locked into clash around 11:00am.

At one stage, rival group men chopped and shot Samsuddin Prodhan while he was going to Baluakandi Abdul Gaffar School & College vote center in the upazila, leaving him dead on the spot.

Besides, 10 others from both the groups were injured during the clash.

Some of the injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and body of Samsuddin was kept at the DMCH morgue.  

Police Superintendent of Munshiganj Habibur Rahman confirmed the matter to banglanews.
