Amu violates electoral code of conduct: EC

DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) on Monday asked the cabinet secretary to draw the prime minister’s attention about violation of electoral code of conduct by minister in Sunday’s upazila polls.

The EC alleged that industries minister Amir Hossain Amu and Former posts and telecommunications minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju violated the electoral code of conduct during the fourth phase of the upazila elections.

Earlier, M Shamsul Haque, a BNP-backed chairman candidate made complaint against Rajiuddin.

Besides, Raju was living at Narsingdi Circuit House which is another violation of electoral code of conduct.

Sources said EC accepted the complaint and sent it to the Speaker to draw his attention.

On the other hand, Amu had allegedly introduced an Awami League candidate to people at a ceremony at Jhalokati’s Rajapur on March 21.

The EC sent a letter to the Prime Minister through the Cabinet Division mentioning voting will be held there on March 31, in the fifth phase of upazila election.

Electoral code of conduct strictly prohibits the speaker in parliament, deputy speaker, chief whip, ministers, state ministers and any persons having the ranks equivalent to these designations from electioneering of any kind in the polls to the upazila parishads.
