Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus will depart for New York tonight to participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), officials confirmed.
According to Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahammad, Professor Yunus is expected to arrive in New York on September 22 and deliver his address to the General Assembly on September 26. He is scheduled to return to Dhaka on October 2.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain earlier announced that four political leaders will accompany the Bangladesh delegation this year: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP leader Humayun Kabir, Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syeed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, and National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Akhter Hossen.
In his upcoming speech, the Chief Adviser is expected to highlight the interim government’s achievements over the past year and reaffirm its commitment to democratic reforms and to holding free and fair elections scheduled for February next year, the adviser also said.
This year’s UNGA carries particular significance for Bangladesh as the UN will, for the first time, host a High-Level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar on September 30, he added.
