Danilo Türk, President of the Club de Madrid and former President of Slovenia, met with Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in the United States on Wednesday, extending a formal invitation to join the prestigious international organisation.
During the meeting, Türk praised Professor Yunus for his pioneering contributions to microcredit, citing its transformative impact on global development.
He expressed admiration for Yunus’s leadership in Bangladesh’s ongoing political transition and said the Club would be honoured to benefit from his insight.
“We would be honoured to have you participate in our events. We would also greatly appreciate your insights into the democratic transformation currently underway in Bangladesh,” Türk told Yunus.
Referring to Bangladesh’s July Uprising, the Club de Madrid president remarked that the movement had captured international attention and underscored the importance of helping global leaders understand such significant democratic shifts.
Türk also voiced strong support for the interim government led by Professor Yunus and its efforts to foster inclusive democratic governance.
In response, the Chief Adviser welcomed the invitation, expressing readiness to share Bangladesh’s experiences in navigating political reform. “We are still walking through the jungle, figuring out how to lead the country toward a democratic transformation,” said Yunus. “Our focus remains firmly on this path.”
Club de Madrid is the world’s largest forum of democratic former presidents and prime ministers, bringing together experienced global leaders to support inclusive democratic practices and promote human development worldwide.
Lamiya Morshed, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Coordinator to the Chief Adviser, was also present at the meeting.
