Protests in Khagrachhari over gang rape of schoolgirl

A half-day road blockade disrupted transport across Khagrachhari on Thursday (Sept 25) as hill tribe students protested the gang rape of an eighth-grade schoolgirl, demanding the arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible.

The demonstration, which began at 6 am and is set to continue until noon, has halted all internal and long-distance vehicular movement in the district.

Protesters, primarily from hill tribe communities, have barricaded roads with bricks and tree logs at multiple locations, effectively bringing traffic to a standstill.

The blockade has received support from three hill tribe organizations affiliated with the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF-Prasit group).

The assault occurred on Tuesday evening in the Singinala area of Khagrachhari town.

According to locals and police, the victim, a minor, was returning home after private tuition when several youths allegedly sedated and attacked her. She was found unconscious at around 11 pm in an abandoned location and was subsequently admitted to Khagrachhari District Hospital for treatment.

Police have arrested one suspect, identified as Shayan Shil, 19, on Wednesday morning.

Abdul Baten Mridha, officer-in-charge (OC) of Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station, says efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining perpetrators.

The victim’s father has filed a case with the local police station in connection with the incident.
