6th phase UZ polls in May 1st week

DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) is planning to hold sixth phase of polls to rest 20/22 upazilas within the first week of May.

The EC also will announce the polls schedule after of Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed returns from the USA on April 14.

Election Commissioner Mohammad Shahnawaz made the disclosure while talking to journalists at his office on Monday.

He said, “We will try to arrange polls in the upazilas where polls were not held and the upazilas to which court postponed elections within the first week of May to avoid any unexpected situation.”

He also said Zila Parishad and Dhaka City Corporations elections will be held after the finalization of acts in this regard.

The EC would take the field reports into cognizance to avoid any untoward situation in the future, he added.

Mohammad Shahnawaz also said EC would hold municipality and Union Parishad polls in the next year (2015).

Regarding polls act, he said EC wants the power to cancel any polls result until the gazette publishes. “In that case EC can take actions considering the situation,” he said.
