DHAKA: Bangladesh Medical Association, a professional body of the doctors’, observed work abstention across the country for one hour on Wednesday.

The doctors remained themselves off-duty from 12:00 noon to 1:00pm protesting the attacks on their fellows at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Doctors at the DMCH were seen giving service except that hour.

DMCH emergency unit resident surgeon Dr Riaz Morshed told banglanews: “As per the pre-announced programme of BMA, the doctors went on strike from 12:00pm to 1:00pm wearing black badges.”

He added: “But the hospital emergency unit was not closed, service was given to the patients.”

On Monday noon, association secretary general Iqbal Arslan announced a two day four-phase protest programme at press conference at BMA Bhaban in city’s Topkhana Road.

The agenda include a one-hour work abstention from 12:00pm to 1:00 pm and wearing black badges at every medical institution on May 14., human chain at Shahbagh from 12:00pm to 1:00pm on the day, and a 2-hour abstention by specialist doctors at private chambers from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on May 15.

Arslan, at the press brief, claimed that a vested quarter has been working for past six months to create a chaotic situation that includes assaulting doctors at the medical institutions across the country.

A total of 22 attacks have been recorded in recent time and cases filed regarding these incidents, he assed.

However, the DMCH intern doctors have been observing abstention from works from Sunday 12:00pm as a protest of attacks on three intern doctors in city’s Chankhar Pool area on Saturday.
