Dinajpur: On the third day of their strike, the striking casual workers of Madhyapara Granite Mining Company Ltd went berserk and kept confined at least 35 officials and employees, including the managing director, inside the MGMCL residential complex since Monday night.

The executives and staff members were not freed till the filing of this report on Tuesday evening.

The miners blocked the two main entrances to the complex on Monday night as their talks with the management failed to resolve the stalemate, reports banglanews24.com.bd Dinajpur correspondent.

Meanwhile, the labourers of neighboring Barapukuria Coalmine expressed their solidarity with the provisional workers of Maddhyapara.

Sources said police failed to free the officials as the belligerent workers compelled the cops to stay aloof.

Faruk Hossain, the confined MGMCL managing director, told banglanews24.com.bd over mobile phone, “The labourers confined us to the rest house. As per the administration’s suggestion, we will hold a meeting with them at 7 pm today (Tuesday)”

General Secretary of the union Mostafizur Rahman said, “As the authorities have intended to sit with us, we will take decision on the strike following the result of the meeting.”

The temporary miners started the indefinite strike on Sunday night demanding regularization of their jobs and payment of arrears. The strike also forced the MGMCL authorities to suspend the sale of rocks.
