Probe body formed on gold smuggling in Ctg

DHAKA: A three-member inquiry team has been constituted with Deputy Director of Customs Intelligence Mustafizur Rahman to look into the gold smuggling of 16-kg seized by at Chittagong Shah Amanat Airport. 

The other members of the committee are Assistant Director Mokaddes Hossain and Assistant Revenue Officer Momin Uddin.

The team has been asked to find the persons in connection with the smuggling. 

Customs Intelligence Officials seized 16.09 kg gold in 136 bars from a luggage which came from a flight of Fly Dubai on Saturday evening at Chittagong Shah Amanat Airport. 

The flight landed in Chittagong at 8:00pm. 

Acting on secret information, Customs Intelligence officials took positions at different points. 

Sensing the tight security, the carrier left the luggage wrapped with blanket in the customs hall. 

The officials found the luggage suspicious and took it through the scanning machine. Then it was opened in presence of different agencies.

The gold bars were concealed inside the battery chargers of different sizes. 

The value of the gold is Tk 8 crore.

However, a tag was found with the luggage. As per the tag, the owner of the luggage is M Sarwar. 

The gold was deposited to the Customs House Valuables Godown in Chittagong for handing over to Bangladesh Bank.

The team will now find the actual carrier after detailed inquiry that will lead to filing FIR in Thana to further prosecute under the Customs Act 1969 (Section 2S) and Special Power Act 1974 (Section 25 B).
