Govt to monitor commercial councilors’ performance

DHAKA: In a bid to boost trade and commercial relations with business partner countries, the government will give priority to monitor performance of commercial councilors in abroad.

If any councilor has failed to fulfill government assigned works, he will be withdrawn from respective country, said sources concerned.

The government is going to implement this decision to increase business activities and strengthen business relations with commercial partners, said commerce ministry sources.

At present, 19 commercial councilors have been working in 17 countries.

These 19 commercial councilors are working in India, United States, United Kingdom, France, Canada, Belgium, Japan, China, Iran, Australia, United Arab Emirates, Myanmar, Russia, Malaysia, Germany and Switzerland.

Of them, four councilors are working in India and United States as government have designated double councilors in the two counties to enhance commercial relations and decrease trade deficit.

Now, the government is mulling to appoint a new commercial councilor in South Korea.

Those councilors have failed to acquire government target in last financial year, commerce ministry will send letter to them informing that their works are being monitored.

Dr M Saidur Rahman Selim, deputy secretary of commerce ministry said to banglanews that commerce ministry is working sincerely to increase export income. In 2013-14 financial year the target of export earning was $ 350 crore and of them $318 crore have been achieved.

The government will take initiative to boost the trade by the commercial councilors soon, he told.
