DHAKA: With a view to increasing income of city corporations, the government is likely to collect city duty setting up toll plazas in all entrances of the capital Dhaka.
Two city corporations (South and North) have already sent proposals separately to government in this regard.
DCCs mulling that they would earn additional Tk. 300 crore if their proposals have been passed. And the money will be spent in developing city roads and other repairing works.
DCC (North) administrator M Farooque Jalil said, they will impose city duty from the 2014-15 fiscal year.
In line with the decision, DCC proposed the government to increase allocation to Tk 100 crore from Tk 80 lakhs.
City duty had been introduced the then municipality in the 1980 and was canceled in 1981, says Farooque Jalil.
The administrator alleged that BRTA collect tax from vehicles for using road and giving registration, but does not give it to City Corporation. For this reason, DCCs urged the government to introduce city duty soon.
On July 7, 2013, LGRD minister Syed Ashraful Islam in the parliament told government will introduce city duty in all entry points of the Dhaka city.
