Cameron to ‘work together’ with BD govt

DHAKA: British Prime Minister David Cameron has ‘agreed to work together’ with the incumbent Bangladesh government despite having ‘disappointment over the January 5 polls.’

A spokesperson of 10 Downing Street made the disclosure on Tuesday.

Earlier, Hasina held an hour-long bilateral meeting with her United Kingdom counterpart Cameron at the 10 Downing Street ahead of the Girl Summit in London.

At the meeting, Cameron spoke about eliminating child marriage, January 5 Bangladesh election, development goals and Bangladeshi diaspora in UK.

The spokesperson said, during the meeting, “Cameron noted his government’s disappointment over the January 2014 Bangladesh election,” but “agreed to work together on post 2015 development goals.”

The UK government expressed the disappointment over the January 5 election because “more than half of constituencies (went) uncontested.”

The both leaders “agreed on the importance of an open society and political system in which democratic political participation and media freedoms are respected,” the spokesperson added.

The British premier “welcomed Hasina for her government’s commitment to eliminating child marriage” and the two leaders “agreed on the need for a strong follow up on this commitment.”

Hasina also discussed the latest work on empowering and educating women and girls in Bangladesh.

Cameron welcomed the important role of the Bangladeshi diaspora in the UK and the contribution they make to its cultural and economic life.

Hasina also held separate meetings with UNICEF executive director Anthony Lake and UK minister of state in the Department for International Development Desmond Swayne at Walworth Academy during her three-day official visit to London.

She also met UK shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander and a delegation of All Party Parliamentary Group of UK there.

Hasina left London on Wednesday.
