DHAKA: After a half-hour service disruption in several countries around the globe on June 19, Facebook went offline once more early around 12 p.m. ET on Friday.
Facebook Inc said service to the world’s largest online social network has been fully restored, following a widespread outage that affected users in multiple countries.
“Earlier this morning, some people had trouble accessing Facebook for a short time. We quickly investigated and have fully restored service for everyone. We’re sorry for the inconvenience,” Facebook said in an emailed statement.
Mashable reported that Facebook’s service went down about midnight Malaysian time and while some could regain access after about 30 minutes, full service was restored only after 2am.
“Many users also reported that Instagram was down during the Facebook outage. Although the Facebook-operated service was briefly affected, it appeared to recover much faster than Facebook itself, within minutes.”
Time.com reported that Americans had also called emergency services 911 on Facebook, to which Sergeant Burton Brink of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department tweeted: “is not a Law Enforcement issue, please don’t call us about it being down, we don’t know when FB will be back up!”
International media reported that, similar to the brief June service interruption, Facebook users took to Twitter to vent or post comments, many using the hashtag #facebookdown.
“Facebook is Down?! Oh God! Now How the Hell Am I Going to Find Out How My Friends Feel About Facebook Being Down?!” one user tweeted.
Another wrote: “Facebook going down for 15 minutes is proof that today’s generation would’ve survived approximately 8 seconds in the 80s.”
A Twitter user with the handle @TheTweetofGod wrote, “#facebookdown. Please remain calm and do not attempt to interact with human beings.”
Facebook, which has 1.32 billion monthly users, is still investigating the incident, but all signs suggest a “technical” failure rather than any suspicious activity, said a person familiar with the matter.
Some visitors to the site during the service disruption were greeted with a message that read “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.”
It was not immediately clear how widespread the disruption was, though international media was aware of users having trouble accessing the site in the US, Chile and India.
