Indigenous People’s Day being marked

DHAKA: The indigenous people from various region of the country gathered at Central Shaheed Minar on Saturday on the occasion of World Indigenous People’s Day.

People from all walks of life joined in the rally at Shaheed Minar. 

Releasing balloons, Chairman of National Human Rights Commission Dr. Mizanur Rahman inaugurated the programme of World Indigenous Peoples Day around 10:40am. 

Later, the program started through singing national anthem.   Then Garo community presents their traditional dance. 

After a short rally there, a colourful procession was brought out from Central Shaheed Minar to celebrate the International Day.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon, Bangladesh Adivasi Forum President Jyotirindra Bodhipriyo Larma, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique were attended in the programme among others. 

Different organisations will hold programmes throughout the country on the occasion.

The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of the World's Indigenous People is observed on August 9 each year to promote and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population.
