Kamal files 6 cases against 3 dailies

DHAKA: Dhaka-15 (Mirpur) constituency Lawmaker Kamal Ahmed Majumdar on Thursday filed six separate defamation cases against three national dailies accusing them of publishing defamatory news against him.

The newspapers include two Banlga dailies Prothom Alo and Kaler Kantha, and an English daily The Daily Sun.

Kamal filed three separate lawsuits with Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court against the newspapers and lodged three other money suits with the civil court demanding Tk 100 crore as compensation.

Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman and reporter Kamrul Hasan, Kaler Kantha editor Imdadul Haq Milon and reporter Tofazzel Hossain Rubel and Daily Sun editor Amir Hossan were made accused in the cases.

In three ceases filed with the CMM court, the plaintiff alleged that his fame was damaged following the report publications at daily Prothom Alo on August 17 and at daily Kaler Kantha and the Daily Sun on August 18.

In three cases filled with the civil court, Kamal alleged his fame was damaged by the reports and demanded Tk 100 crore.

Taking the cases into cognizance, Metropolitan Magistrate Mollah Saiful Islam recorded the plaintiff’s statement in the cases against Kaler Kantha and The Daily Sun while Metropolitan Magistrate SM Ashikur Rahman recorded statement in the case against Prothom Alo.

The magistrates, however, handed down no order in the ceases.
