Uranium smugglers on 5-day remand

DHAKA: 11 members of Uranium smuggling gang were placed on 5-day remand for police interrogation.

Magistrate Anwar Sadat passed the order remand after the hearing when police produced them before the court with seven-day remand plea.

Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (DB) detained them with Uranium worth Tk 50 crore from capital’s Banani area Sunday.

The arrestees are M Maynal Hossain Sagor, 45, M Humayan Kabir, 48, M Kaium Chowdhury, 54, M Kayesh Ahmad, 54, M Khalek, 44, M Swapan Mollah, 45, M Firoj, 45, M Mahfujur Rahman Nasim, 42, M Aslam Miah, M Mayin Uddin Sarwar Rajan, 35 and M Tofael Ahmed Patwary.

Deputy Commissioner (South) Krisnapodo Roy made the disclosure at a press briefing at DMP Media Center.

Krisnapodo Roy said “We are not sure yet whether it is Uranium or not. It can be said after testing. We seized 2 pound Uranium, a radiation proof jacket, hand gloves and radiation machines.”   

He also added, “The detainees admitted in primary interrogation that the Uranium-like thing reached to them six months ago. They showed video of it to the interested buyers.”

Uranium is being used in nuclear plant and to make nuclear bomb.

The result of its purity will come within two weeks after examined by City’s Atomic Energy Commission and Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR).
