Jamuna flood control dam collapses

BOGRA: A vast area under Sariakandi upazila of the district was flooded as large portions of the flood control embankment of Jamuna River collapsed early Friday, leaving thousands of people marooned.

Around 50-60 feet of the dam of Rouhadah Bazar area under Kamalpur union of the upazila were completely demolished due to heavy pressure of water of the river.

Water from the river entered the upazila following collapse of the flood control dam, sources added.

The people of Bogra and Sirajganj districts are at high risk due to this unwanted calamity. The district town of Bogra is also facing threat to be submerged at anytime.

The Sub Divisional Engineer of Water Development Board Abdul Mottalib confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Sources said that, earlier the dams of the area were been noticed at a high risks as breaches have developed several points and the water development board also tried to stop the collapse but failed.

Moreover, hundreds of houses and acres of croplands land have been inundated in a shorter while.

Heavy current of Jamuna also caused river erosion at different points of Sariakandi including Kamalpur, Chandanbaisha and other places. Water was flowing some 84 centimeters up from the danger level in the area.

The flood affected people were running to and fro to save their lives and homesteads as all of a sudden, the water from the river flooded the areas by breaking the dams.
