DHAKA: The Supreme Court will deliver its verdict on Wednesday on the appeal filed by death row Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee against his penalty for the 1971 wartime offences.

A five-member judge’s panel of the court led by Chief Justice Mozammel Hossain will hand down the verdict. 

The four other judges are Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, Justice Abdul Wahad Mia, Justice Hasan Fayez Siddiqui and Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury.

The appellate division of the court kept the case on top of the cause-list for the verdict. 

On February 28 last year, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 awarded death penalty in two charges although the eight charges were proved against him.

On March 28, Sayedee filed an appeal with the apex court seeking acquittal from the charges and the government side on the same day submitted a separate appeal to the SC demanding capital punishment in all the eight charges.

Sayedee was involved in the incidents like killing, looting at Pararhat, raping of female and converting Hindu people into Muslims in Pirojpur area.
