PAMS important platform for stability

DHAKA: The Pacific Armies Management Seminar (PAMS) is an important platform for inter-country cooperation and regional stability and peace, said US Army Pacific Commanding General Vincent K Brooks  

The US general was addressing the 38th PAMS in a city hotel in the mourning.

General Brooks said militancy and terrorism has no definite area or country and it does not have any boundary too.

He hoped that Bangladesh under leading of General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan would play pivotal role on the matter and this seminar would open a wide horizon of cooperation.

Brooks said united cooperation from all necessary to face the international militancy and terrorism.

General Iqbal delivered the welcome speech at the function.

He said surprising changes have come in state’s security issue after the cold war. Inter-state conflicts have down rather new forces has arose. 

No country can face threats to the security alone. For this, cooperation from all is necessary, he added.

General Iqbal said issues, including on transnational crimes, natural calamities, occupying of mineral resources and security threats will be discussed in the seminar.

Bangladesh Army chief of general staff lieutenant general Mainul Islam also spoke at the function.

This year the theme of PAMS is “a new focus on the Asia-Pacific region: Opportunities and challenges for land forces”. Representatives from 25 countries have taken part in the seminar. 

Bangladesh is co-hosting the PAMS with the US Army for the second times some 22 years after the country first hosted the event in 1994. 

It is a multinational military seminar that provides a forum for senior-level (lieutenant colonel to lieutenant general, or national equivalent) officers from the Asia Pacific’s regional ground forces to exchange views and ideas.  

Pacific Armies Management Seminars have been held throughout the Asia Pacific Region since 1978 with the officials from nine countries. Now it is a platform of 36 countries.
