GP offers smartphone, free internet at Tk 4,650

DHAKA: One of the leading cell phone operating companies in the country Grameenphone (GP) has offered a Symphony handset with free internet service at Tk 4,650.

The offer is applicable for GP Bondhu package users only.

GP chief executive officer (CEO) Vivek Sood made the disclosure in a press conference at a city hotel on Tuesday.

The phone, called GoFox F15, is developed by Symphony, one of the leading mobile phone brands in Bangladesh. It has two cameras one with 3.2 mega pixel on the back and 0.3 MP on the front. The battery durability is 1450 amplifier.

The GoFox phone comes loaded with the new WowBox service from Telenor Digital, designed to get customers on the internet right away free of charge.

With the package, the customers can enjoy 20-MB free internet service and other facilities through Mozila FireFox OS.

The phone will also provide popular applications including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Vivek Sood, CEO of Grameenphone, a part of the Telenor Group, said, “We want more customers to experience mobile services on smartphones.”

He added: “By stimulating the Mozilla developer community to create more locally relevant apps coupled with Telenor’s WowBox service, we expect to see increase internet uptake and usage in Bangladesh.”

Senior Vice-President and also Telenor Digital head Rolv-Erik Spilling, Mozilla chief technology officer (CTO) Dr Andreas Gal, among others were present at the briefing.

Rolv-Erik Spilling said “This launch was made possible through the cooperation between Grameenphone, Telenor, Mozilla and Symphony”.

“For us, it’s important to provide the Bangladeshi market with an easy, affordable and locally relevant mobile internet experience, which the Firefox phone enables,” he added.

Dr Andreas Gal said “We are happy to be partner with Grameenphone, the leading operator in Bangladesh, to bring Firefox OS phones to more users in Asia.”

“Telenor’s ´Internet for All´ strategy is well-aligned with Mozilla’s mission for Firefox OS – promoting openness, innovation and opportunity online,” he added.
