DHAKA: At least one crore city dwellers are leaving Dhaka to celebrate this year’s Eid-ul-Azha with near and dear ones at their village homes.

Sources told banglanews that the exodus has already began from Thursday with at least two days of extra holidays – the weekend – being tagged to the Eid vacation.

Moreover, large crowds of passengers are also seen at the city’s bus and launch terminals, and train stations on Friday, sources added.

However, at least one crore people are going to celebrate their Eid at out of Dhaka this year, said Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity.

Samity secretary general Mozammel Haque Chowdhury told banglanews that at least 30 lakh homebound people are leaving the capital by roadway while more than 35 lakh via rail and about 30 lakh on waterways in this Eid while a few people are using  domestic flights.

Nevertheless, the sum is almost two thirds of the total population of Dhaka as currently 1.64 crore people are living in the city now, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT).
